What Is a Customer Support Chatbot?

Learn how customer support chatbots answer routine questions, use approved knowledge, escalate to people, and improve from real conversations.

What does a customer support chatbot do?

A customer support chatbot gives customers a conversational way to find answers from help content, FAQs, policies, product pages, and documents. It is most useful as a first line of support for recurring questions, not as a replacement for human judgment in sensitive, disputed, or high-impact situations.

Ground answers in approved support knowledge

Start with current information your team already trusts. Include direct answers, exceptions, eligibility rules, contact routes, and escalation steps. Test questions whose answers exist and questions the chatbot should decline so unsupported topics do not turn into guesses.

Design a clear path to a person

Customers should be able to request human help when the issue is complex or the chatbot cannot support an answer. Preserve the question and conversation context so the handoff or later follow-up starts with useful information instead of making the customer repeat everything.

Measure support quality, not just chat volume

Track answered and unanswered questions, feedback, lead or handoff outcomes, and recurring content gaps. A growing chat count does not prove the assistant helped; use the conversation data to improve source content and reduce avoidable dead ends.

Build it in Ask My Bot

Create a bot, add the source content that answers your audience’s real questions, test privately, then publish by link, widget, or QR code when the answers are ready.
